AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2019 champion Nesthy Alcayde Petecio’s younger brother Norlan Petecio opened his Asian Youth Boxing Championships 2019 bid on a high note after scoring a victory over a Turkmenistan opponent Tuesday in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Norlan, a 17-year-old native of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur, outlasted Turkmenistan’s Eziz Muhammetmyradov, 3-2, in their men’s lightweight (60 kilograms) division preliminary bout.

He will next face India’s Ankit Narwal who defeated Tulga Oyunbaatar of Mongolia earlier.

Norlan, in an interview with SunStar Davao last October, said: “Dili ko mag-promise pero buhaton nako ang tanan para makuha ang gold (I won’t promise anything but I will do my best to win.”

He said this following a quarterfinals loss last year in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

The younger Petecio entered the national boxing team in 2017, wanting to follow the footsteps of his elder sisters Nesthy and Nice Zzaa.

Norlan won a silver medal in the Andaman Games in Thailand. (MLSA)
