THE Philippine Asean Paralympic Games Organizing Committee (Philapgoc) found a steady ally in the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as the agency's Chairman William Ramirez promised support to the 2020 Asean Paragames set in the country in January 2020.

From January 18 to 25, the country expects 2,500 athletes, coaches and officials for this twin-event of the South East Asian Games that will be held from November 30 to December 11 this year.

Ramirez said the PSC has committed to give P100-million funding for the hosting and shall also lend a hand in looking for additional funds from other sources.

"We will support them because, like the SEA Games, this is also a national commitment," the sports chief said, adding they also informed the Philippine Paralympic Committee, headed by Michael Barredo, that they want to see them finally hold their election next year.

"Good governance of sports associations is important, and the PSC will use its supervisory and visitorial rights on these associations to make sure that proper management is in place since public funds are being given to them," he added.

This is the second time the Philippines is hosting this multi-sports games for differently-abled athletes. In 2005, the Philippines also hosted the third edition of the Asean Paragames after its SEA Games hosting. (PR)
