THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is throwing its support to the 7th Tabanog Festival 2019 on May 9 to 11 in Sulop, Davao del Sur.

Organizer Zaldy Garrote, in a press conference Tuesday, April 9, at the PSC Mindanao Office at Juna Subdivision in Matina, Davao City, said, “First time namo mag-link with PSC. Dako among pasalamat (It’s our first time to link with PSC, we are very thankful).”

He said a kite-making workshop is set on May 9 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. followed by a Dulang Kabilin (Heritage Games) at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Sulop Central School while Paaway sa Tabanog is slated 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 10. The thematic kite flying contest, featuring cartoon characters, will take centerstage on May 11.

Garrote was accompanied by SK chairman Mark Gallardo and Engr. Richard Regidor at the PSC Mindanao office.

“Duna pud miy himuong coastal Children’s Games sa Hagonoy, Padada og Sulop pero sports and environment ang among konsepto. I-instill namo sa mga bata ang pagpananum og pag nurture sa mangrove. Available man ang seedlings na magamit (We will also hold a coastal Children’s Games in Hagonoy, Pada and Sulop but the sports and environment will be our concept. We would instill among the children how to plant and nurture the mangrove),” he said.

The coastal Children’s Games will be held third week of May.

PSC Mindanao head Ed Fernandez, for his part, said nurturing the environment should also start among children.

“PSC is supporting the Tabanog Festival and the coastal Children’s Games in Davao del Sur as it’s been the mandate of the agency to bring sports to the periphery. It’s good to start with our children not just in sports but also in taking good care of our environment,” Fernandez said.

He also assured stakeholders, saying, “We will make sports so alive in Mindanao.”
