Tancontian to mentor Davao wrestling team

SYDNEY Sy Tancontian, 2017 Southeast Asian Games (Seag) judo bronze medalist, will coach the 10-member Davao City wrestling team in the Batang Pinoy 2018 National Championships slated September in Baguio City.

Former wrestling regional director Paolo Tancontian, in an interview, said now is the time to pass the torch of coaching to his only daughter Sydney, who just went home in Davao City last week after a month-long training from Japan.

"She is the rightful to coach the athletes because she has the learned the fundamentals of the sports since she started apart from holding many wrestling competitions championship titles," Paolo said.

Before beinh acquired by the University of Sto. Tomas, Sydney remain undisputed in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao and national championships in both judo and wrestling.

She kept seven gold medals in judo and four gold medals in wrestling in the said event.

The older Tancontian, meanwhile, shared that Sydney began the training last week at the Holiday Gym and Spa.

He also said that this will be continuous until next month.

Davao City's wrestling team will be composed mostly by Leon Garcia National High School students led by the Amaya brothers.
