Y-Speak: Insensitive and omnivorous panic buying

Sunnexdesk

AS THIS pandemic heats up the entire globe, there were some who got infected by it survive the disease. Covid-19 affects people of but is deadlier once it affects the elderly or those who have existing health conditions.

Because of this, the economic and social disturbance the virus brought with it became exceedingly alarming. Shelves of rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizers, face masks, and other food necessities in supermarkets were left emptied out by panic buyers.

People in this serious situation are not sure who to go to. They do what most creatures do when they are afraid and confused. As a result, individuals tend to mimic what the others are doing – in this case buying all the rubbing alcohol and face masks they can find.

For some people, this panic buying made them feel like they are prepared should the virus come. It may feel like a measure of control.

However, this omnivorous act of buying is making the situation more difficult. The people who may really require and need the alcohol, hand sanitizers, and less-perishable goods are the weak, the sick, and the older individuals. Children also are highly affected and at risk.

Face masks are generally needed by medical experts especially the frontline professionals during this time of calamity. This decreasing supply for them implies a higher probability of Covid-19 spreading in the community.

In view of this, insensitive panic buying could affect the others. The people are expected to be selfless. Let us not just think for ourselves and our families’ safety but also for the entire affected community. (Jirah Gualberto/UM intern)
