THE Iloilo City Council approved on October 1 the supplemental budget that included a P2.3-million fund for the establishment of a dialysis center in Barangay East Baluarte in Molo district

Mayor Jerry Treñas initiated the dialysis center for indigent recipients in the metropolis who are battling both kidney diseases, and costly clinic or hospital fees and services.

He noted the facility was initially a new health center and found it a good one to host the equipment.

"This project is one of our priorities to address the health needs and concerns of constituents. The Department of Health (DOH) regional office will be donating four dialysis machines," Treñas said.

"This initiative will provide free treatment to beneficiaries. This will defray them of P4,000 fees per dialysis session," he added.

Hemodialysis uses a special filter called a dialyzer that functions as an artificial kidney to clean the blood, while peritoneal dialysis is another procedure that removes extra water and wastes from the body, according to the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. (PR)
