AUTHORITIES arrested on Tuesday evening, May 14, two men who are suspected of burning two vote-counting machines (VCMs) in Jones, Isabela.

Cagayan Police Regional Office spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Chevalier Iringan identified the suspects as Jayson Leaño and Rodel Pascual, both from Sta. Isabel in Jones town.

He said Pascual was arrested in a hot pursuit operation around 10:30 p.m. in Barangay Diarao while Leaño surrendered to the barangay chairman of Barangay Sta. Isabel around 9:30 a.m. of Wednesday, May 15.

Iringan said the suspects were positively identified by an eyewitness.

At around 6 a.m. of Tuesday, two armed men waylaid a dump truck which was then transferring VCMs to the Jones municipal hall.

The suspects reportedly ordered the occupants of the truck to alight from the vehicle and unload the VCMs together with at least 200 unread ballots from the polling precincts in Barangay Dicamay I before setting these on fire.

Interrogation of the suspects is still ongoing. (SunStar Philippines)
