Army official succumbs to Covid-19

A MILITARY general had died from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Brigadier General Bagnus Gaerlan, assistant commander of the 1st Infantry Division based in Zamboanga del Sur, succumbed to the highly infectious disease Monday morning, September 6, 2021.

Major General Ernesto Torres, Army chapter president of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class of 1989, said Gaerlan was the fourth member of their class to die from Covid-19.

The other mortalities were Jun Unson, Danny Olay and Allan Cordova.

As of September 5, AFP spokesperson Colonel Ramon Zagala said there have been 17,133 Covid-19 cases in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). These included 1,323 active cases, 35 deaths and 15,244 recoveries.

In the Philippine National Police (PNP), a total of 35,703 personnel have contracted the disease.

Of the total, 2,238 were active cases, 108 were mortalities and 33,357 have recovered. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
