Cases, deaths jump as end of quarantine nears

NEW coronavirus infections spiked to a new 24-hour high of 350 for the month of May, just five days before the community quarantine in the country is set to end.

The total case count in the country as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, is 14,669.

Mortalities went back to double-digit levels as the Department of Health (DOH) reported 13 new deaths, which brought the death toll to 886.

The DOH also said 89 more patients have recovered from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), increasing the total number of recoveries so far to 3,412.

Of the total, 10,371 are active cases.

As of Tuesday, there are already 34 RT-PCR licensed laboratories and eight licensed Gene Xpert laboratories in the country.

Globally, the novel coronavirus or Sars-CoV-2 has infected more than 5.3 million people, including 342,029 who had died as of May 25. (MVI/JTM/SunStar Philippines)
