THE Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) destroyed on Wednesday, May 22, over 7,000 illegally attached vehicle accessories such as blinkers and sirens commonly known as "wang-wang".

In a ceremony as part of the HPG’s anniversary held in Camp Crame, the HPG destroyed 4,674 LED lights, 27 strobe lights, four dome lights, 592 fog lights, 429 blinkers, 539 open mufflers, 36 sirens, 783 commemorative plates, eight horns, 25 motor plate covers, and 13 beacon lights using heavy equipment from the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Brigadier General Roberto Fajardo, HPG director, said the items, which were confiscated through the conduct of “Kontra wang-wang” campaign, are being used illegally to get through traffic easily.

Fajardo said such illegal attachments that can distract other motorists can cause accidents.

“The moment they put that attachment on their vehicle is illegal,” he said.

Fajardo said owners of the vehicles with illegal attachments were issued citation tickets.

Under the law, these gadgets or devices may be attached and used only on motor vehicles designated for official use by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, Land Transportation Office, Police Departments, Fire Departments, and hospital ambulances.

Violation of the said law is punishable with cancellation or revocation of the certificate of registration of the motor vehicle involved. (SunStar Philippines)
