MALACAÑANG has declared July 9, 2022 a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.

The Palace issued Proclamation No. 2 on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. It was signed by Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez.

Eid’l Adha is the second and biggest of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam. It commemorates the deeds of the Prophet Ibrahim or Abraham.

According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim brought his son to the desert to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, as an offering to Allah. But Allah, through an angel, stopped Ibrahim and told him to sacrifice a lamb instead of his son.

In honor of Ibrahim’s sacrifice, Muslims must slaughter a lamb or goat and divide its meat among family, friends and neighbors.

The celebration of Eid’l Adha also marks the end of the annual Hajj or pilgrimage of Muslims to the Holy City of Mecca.
