THE Philippines climbed four notches to settle at 24th place in a survey of best countries for expatriates, a feat that the Philippine National Police (PNP) attributed to the improved peace and order situation in the country.

“This only shows that the continuing peace and order campaign of the government significantly contributed in creating a secure environment where our fellowmen and even foreign tourists feel safe to work, live and do business in our country,” said PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde.

The 2019 Expat Explorer Survey by HSBC showed the Philippines moving up to 24th place from 28th in 2018.

The Philippines came just behind the United States, which ranked 23rd in both 2018 and 2019.

China also improved in ranking, but was two notches below the Philippines at 26th this year. It ranked 27th in 2018.

The survey was conducted by HSBC among at least 18,000 expatriates from various countries from March to April.

The standard of living, career opportunity and family life were the three major metrics used in the survey.

“All these surveys and data indicate a positive outlook of our peace and order situation and an affirmation of our accomplishments in the campaign against criminality, illegal drugs and corruption,” said Albayalde.

According to the Department of Tourism, a total of 3.48 million tourists visited the Philippines from January to May 2019, a 9.76-percent increase from last year’s arrivals in the same period. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
