Suspect in Ombudsman prosecutor's death killed

THE alleged suspect tagged in Ombudsman assistant special prosecutor Madonna Joy Tanyag's death was killed on Saturday morning, July 28, following a brawl with a Quezon City police officer.

Angelo Avenido, 31, died after he attempted to seize the service firearm of a police officer while being escorted out of his detention cell in Camp Karingal in Quezon City, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said.

He was rushed to the the East Avenue Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival at around 10:45 a.m., Saturday.

Avenido was arrested by the QCPD last June 4, just hours after the killing of Tanyag.

Tanyag, who was five months pregnant, was stabbed to death in front of a lottery outlet along Visayas Avenue in Vasra village, Quezon City.

Authorities earlier said that "robbery gone wrong" was the possible motive behind Tanyag's killing.

The victim's pouch, containing P9, 000, several identifiation cards, and a cellular phone, was recovered from the suspect during the arrest. (SunStar Philippines)
