THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said a tugboat manned by Filipino crew was seized in the Persian Gulf in the Middle East on Saturday, September 7, because of alleged oil smuggling.

In an advisory Sunday, September 8, the DFA said it was monitoring developments through the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, Iran.

Ambassador to Iran Wilfredo C. Santos reported that the tugboat was seized because of alleged oil smuggling.

Santos told the DFA that Coast Guard authorities have relayed that an investigation was being conducted on the alleged oil smuggling activities of the crew, and once this has been established, the matter will be referred to the local court.

"The Embassy is seeking further updates on the seafarers' condition, and stands ready to provide assistance when needed," DFA said. (MVI/SunStar Philippines)
