NEARLY 3,000 cases of infection were added to the Philippines’ coronavirus tally on Sunday, September 27, 2020.

In its case bulletin as of 4 p.m. Sunday, the Department of Health (DOH) listed 2,995 new cases of infection, bringing the total to 304,226.

DOH also reported another mass time-based recovery of 18,892 on top of the 738 recoveries from routine reports, which brought the total recoveries to 252,510 and reduced the active cases to 46,372.

Under the time-based methodology, coronavirus-positive individuals with no or mild symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) are considered recovered after more than 14 days of having no symptoms. Covid-19 has an incubation period of 14 days.

With the smaller number of remaining active cases, the proportion of critical cases spiked to a new high of 3.7 percent (37 of every 1,000) of the active cases. Patients in severe condition also increased to 1.6 percent.

The proportion of mild and asymptomatic cases was lower at 86 percent and 8.8 percent of the active cases.

There were 60 additional deaths Sunday, raising the death toll to 5,344.

Of the 60, 37 occurred in September, nine in August, 11 in July, two in June and one in April.

Ten cases that were previously tagged as recovery were reclassified to deaths after final validation while 25 duplicates were removed from the total case count.

Among the 2,995 new cases reported on Sunday were 2,694 that occurred in the last two weeks from September 14 to 27.

The highest number of cases were 1,065 from the National Capital Region (NCR), 297 from Cavite, 180 fro, Bulacan, 157 from Batangas and 142 from Laguna.

Transmission of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), has slightly decelerated as it took one month this time for the cases to reach around 100,000 compared to only 24 days in August.

The total case count in the country breached the 100,000 mark on August 2, the 200,000 mark on August 26 and the 300,000 mark on September 26. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
