ONE of the two Chinese nationals rescued in Basilan province died while undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital in this city, a top police official disclosed Monday.
Basilan police director Antonio Mendoza, disclosed that Zi Shun Lu alias Oscar Lu, 51, died around 3 p.m. Monday while undergoing treatment at Ciudad Medical de Zamboanga.
Mendoza said he was informed by the attending physicians that the possible immediate cause of Lu's death is kidney failure.
Lu is to be intubated because he could not urinate since the time he and Bo Shung Tan alias Michael Tan, 27, were brought to the hospital for treatment after they were rescued, said Mendoza.
“Ooperahan sana siya for dialysis para tangalin ang mga dumi sa katawan niya at lagyan ng tubo dahil hindi siya nakakaihi,” Mendoza said.
Chief Superintendent Rolando Puruganan, deputy chief of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations, said he was informed Monday afternoon by the attending physicians that Lu's vital organs were already very weak.
Combined personnel from the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response and Special Action Force have rescued Lu and Tan around 9 p.m. last Friday in Benembengan, Sumisip town.
Lu and Tan, who are both from Guanzhou province, mainland China, were kidnapped on November 10, 2009 together with Marques Singson, 36, by Abu Sayyaf bandits from a plywood factory in Barangay Marketsite, Maluso, Basilan.
The kidnappers beheaded Singson, a resident of Barangay Maligue, Isabela City, after his employer failed to pay the initial ransom demand of P1.5 million.
Meanwhile, Puruganan said Tan was released from the hospital since he already recuperated. (Bong Garcia)
