MANILA -- Former presidential son Mikey Arroyo welcomed the openness of the Aquino administration to pursue Constitutional amendments to forge a peace agreement with Moro rebels.

“It is a vindication of sort for the past administration as it now seems almost everyone is seeing the need to amend the Charter whereas unlike before, any move by the past administration and its allies for the Charter change (Cha-cha) were met by oppositions from the same sector now espousing Cha-cha," Arroyo, Ang Galing Pinoy (AGP) party-list's lawmaker, told Sun.Star in a text message.

Arroyo hopes that Cha-cha will gain more support with the popularity of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and that the government will admit that the past administration of his mother was right all along when it established the need to revisit the Constitution.

“The 1987 Constitution needs to be amended to address ever-growing concerns of the nation in ever-changing situation. Maybe, the 1987 Charter was perfect during the time it was crafted but times have changed and it should now be revisited," he told Sun.Star.

Former President and current Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (second district, Pampanga) earlier filed a House resolution calling for amendments in the Constitution.

House Deputy Minority Leader and Representative Danilo Suarez (third district, Quezon) also filed a House resolution which seeks to modify the term for all elective officials, thereby amending the Constitution. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
