As probe starts, Palma criticizes PDEA 7 for raid

Vince Harlan A. Chua

THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) 7 has started its investigation on the Operation Greyhound at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC).

A team led by CHR 7 chief investigator Leo Villarino visited CPDRC yesterday to interview some of the inmates to determine if their rights were violated during the operation.

Once they conclude their investigation, CHR 7 plans to send the report to their central office in Manila.

Meanwhile, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma urged law enforcers to treat detainees properly despite the nature of their crimes.

Palma said this after seeing the photos of detainees of the CPDRC stripped naked during a joint search earlier this week.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 7 led the operation.

Palma said that while the strip search is part of PDEA 7’s process in investigating the inmates, it also puts them to shame.

He said that stripping the inmates is “improper” and urged law enforcers under PDEA 7 to rethink their methods.

“Put yourselves in the shoes of these people and their families. Is this the best approach?” Palma asked.
