Burnham garbage doubles during Yuletide

LITTERBUGS have found their way to this mountain haven.

City Environment and Parks Management Office Cordelia Lacsamana reported garbage at Burnham Park alone has doubled during the holidays.

Lacsamana said Burnham park garbage has grown to almost 20 tons during the holidays needing to haul an extra round instead of the regular two rounds a day.

Lacsamana said there are enough garbage bins in the parks but sadly, tourists have opted to throw waste everywhere.

The park head said majority of the waste is from picnics with styro plates, spoons and forks, cups and unfinished food thrown in parks as part of the litter haul CEPMO personnel have to haul daily.

For Burnham Park alone, CEPMO reports on regular days there are six tons of garbage collected by two trucks plying twice a day. On peak days, garbage is seen to double with 12 tons of garbage collected.

Lacsamana however said during December 25, there was an exceptionally large haul of waste of over 18 tons, forcing CEPMO to make another haul of collection to rid Baguio’s biggest park of waste.

CEPMO has advocated for a “Garbage in, Garbage out” policy for visitors, advising park goers to bring with them trash and not to litter a plea which has fallen on deaf ears.

Lacsamana said CEPMO personnel did not have augmentation during the holiday and have to make do with current staffing which.
