Capitol helps revive youth's interest in guitars

STARTING June 20, music enthusiasts will lend their talents to Cebuano students to improve their skills in playing guitar.

The workshop, dubbed as “Gitara Cebuana,” was initated by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) of the Cebu Provincial Government to also help revive the youth's interest in guitars.

Twenty-four musically inclined students from different municipalities will be engaged in a session every Saturday for six months under the guidance of Cebu Guitar Foundation (CGF).

Develop talents

Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale said they hope to form a guitar ensemble after the workshop who can perform in different activities and festivals and can be tapped to entertain foreign guests.

“We thought of training the children because there are many out-of-school youth who don't know how to read notes but they know how to play the guitar well,” she said in an interview posted on the Cebu Provincial Government's website.

Magpale, vice chairperson of Provincial Council for the Welfare of Children (PCWC), said they have also been conducting guitar duet competitions in the last three years to help these youth improve the craft.

Gitara Cebuana will be launched on June 20 at 4th floor lobby of the Capitol's legislative building.
