Capitol ready for National Earthquake Drill

Vince Harlan A. Chua

IF you plan to go to the Cebu Provincial Capitol this morning for transactions, you might need to reschedule them next week.

The Provincial Government will hold a simultaneous earthquake drill today.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head Baltazar Tribunalo clarified, though, that the public can still avail of the Capitol’s services after the earthquake drill.

Rhafael Luche, head of the PDRRMO Emergency Response, said that Cebu was chosen as the center of the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill organized by the Office of the Civil Defense.

The activity will start at 9 a.m. today.

According to Luche, they plan to implement various scenarios that will simulate the effects of a “fearsome earthquake.”

It will be the same as the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu and Bohol in October 2013 or more.

Luche said they also plan to simulate collapse structure rescue and other emergency response procedures.

She said the PDRMMO wants to determine, through the activity, if the Capitol employees and the public are prepared for the effects of an earthquake.

An earthquake drill will also be held at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and the Central Command in Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

Luche urged the local government units under the Cebu Province to also participate in the drill.
