Cebu Amateur Boxing to take center stage

Sunnexdesk

THE Cebu Amateur Boxing Revival will stage its inaugural event on Aug. 5 at the Plaza Sugbu across the Cebu City Hall.

A total of 12 boxing clubs from all over Cebu Province will compete to bring back the glory days of amateur boxing, following a sub-par performance during the tryouts for the Philippine Team for the Asian Boxing Championship Youth competition last May.

PSC Regional Coordinator and Amateur Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (Abap) Regional Director Lorenzo “Chao” Sy said he already secured permission from Mayor Tomas Osmeña to hold the two meets in August at the Plaza Sugbu.

Sy got the full backing from Cebu boxing godfather Antonio Aldeguer, who also offered his boxing ring, equipment and uniforms to be used for free as well as the full backing of the Philippine Sports Commission through commissioner Ramon S. Fernandez.

Aside from this bi-monthly activity, Sy said that to fast track the development of the boxers, there will be a quarterly tournament that will measure the progress of all the boxers.

In the quarterly tournament, Sy would invite boxers from the neighboring provinces to compete.

There will be 12 bouts scheduled to be staged in every event, which will be classified into four pairs each for the Beginners/Novice, Developmental and Junior categories. (RCM)
