PROSPERITY and good fortune for the year has been opened beautifully through the display of aesthetics brought about by the mix of cultures and traditions. As doors are opened to welcome fortune, happiness and luck, SM Seaside City displayed a massive exhibit featuring 200 artworks by 43 artists mounted by the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students together with Cebu Dynamic Youth entitled “An Exhibit of Chinese and Western Paintings.” The exhibit can be found at Mountain Wing Atrium for the celebration of Chinese New Year 2017. The launching was held last Jan. 21 with a free painting workshop for the media, together with some student artists from different art schools in the city.

Last Jan. 28, for the celebration of the Lunar New Year, a performance with the dragons was held as a tradition for good luck. The dragons danced on stage and roamed around the paintings to bless the event and entertain the audience at the same time. The paintings will be available for viewing until Feb. 5.

With 200 artworks done in Chinese scroll and oil paintings, the Chan Lim family shared to the audience their family’s heritage which are the visual exhibits done all year round. Having been in the industry for almost half a century, three generations of Chan Lim artists have been actively developing and promoting Chinese brush paintings in the Philippines and abroad. With varying styles and techniques, the Chan Lim artists show in their artworks the incorporation of western to eastern art.

The Chan Lim family of artists has conducted numerous art classes, workshops, seminars and on-the-spot painting demonstrations led by the Chan Lim siblings namely Alex, Felix, Rolex and Jolex inspired by their father Chan Lim. Despite being all engineers by profession and managing multinational corporations, the siblings have successfully nurtured the artistic talents of the third generation who are now experimenting with a different kind of artistic era of modern digital techniques and incorporating these into Chinese art.

The Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students has been conducting visual arts exhibits around SM Malls Nationwide and this family tradition was inspired by their patriarch Chan Lim who started the family’s inclination to the arts. Having been a very important symbol of the family, the launching of their first exhibit in SM Seaside City Cebu was simultaneously celebrated with the patriarch’s 80th birthday, and eight of the art exhibits to be held during the year will be specially-themed to celebrate and highlight this felicitous milestone.
