Comelec: No more data hacking in October polls

IN THE midst of the voter registration for the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) assured that safeguards are installed so as not to repeat the hacking incident that happened several months ago.

Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista noted that they made sure voters' data are secured from those who would try to hack their systems again.

“We are more secured this time than before against data hacking,” he said.

The poll body chief added that they are closely coordinating with the Department of Science and Technology to make sure their systems are safe from any form of breach.

“We have undertaken several steps to secure the database after the hacking...We are constantly monitoring them (hacking attempts) as part of our protocol. We monitor them versus any attempts to penetrate our website,” Bautista explained.

To recall, hacker group Anonymous Philippines defaced the Comelec website barely a month before the May 9 polls.

The incident subsequently resulted to the personal information of millions of registered voters being made searchable online, including their full name, complete address, and passport number. (FP/Sunnex)
