DAVAO City jumper Jonash Melchor lived up to his billing by bagging one gold medal and a silver for Team Southern Mindanao in the track and field competition at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila yesterday.

Melchor, who hails from Upper Wangan, Calinan, registered 14.66 meters to a golden finish in men's triple jump but he made 6.67 meters to settle for silver in long jump.

The Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) five-foot-eight standout captured two golds in the National University Games (Uni-Games) in Iloilo City last year.

Melchor, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) junior, was also a gold medalist in the 2008 National Prisaa Championships in Zamboanga City.

Southern Mindanao, meanwhile, got two more silvers courtesy of HCDC's Brian Lupio who placed second in men's 3,000m steeplechase and University of Mindanao (UM) Tagum's Rafael Poliquit who finished runner-up in men's 5 kilometers (K) event.

Brokenshire College's Michael Constantino salvaged a bronze in 3K steeplechase.

The Southern Mindanao men's athletics team is coached by Mamerto Aventurado and Gerlyn Acedo.

The region is also seeing action in swimming, badminton, basketball, volleyball, baseball, beach volleyball, chess, football, judo, tennis, table tennis, sepak takraw, karatedo, softball and taekwondo. (MLSA)
