DepEd worried about Palaro billeting

Vernie Yocogan-Diano

THE Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) athletes and officials will have to be resourceful in the 2010 Palarong Pambansa on April 11-17 in Tarlac City, Tarlac since they will be billeted an hour away from the main venue.

“That is our concern. Central Visayas and Davao athletes will be living in the municipality of Paniqui, which is one hour away from the main venue in Tarlac City. Davao is at the Paniqui North Central School, while we are at the South Central School,” said Dr. Vivian Giñete of the Department of Education regional office.

Aside from the distance, DepEd-7’s concern is the expensive rentals of local jeepneys which, according to Ginete, costs at least P2,000 per day.

Ginete and Dr. Danny Villadolid inspected their quarters last week during the technical officials’ meeting held in Tarlac City.

However, those were the only downside of their billeting quarters.

According to Ginete, Cviraa will have 42 classrooms and 29 comfort rooms, though some improvements are needed in the washing areas and the bathrooms.

Their quarters are also located near a mall and market.

“I was very thankful that we are assigned there because it has its own oval where the athletes can practice and an open multi-purpose gym that can be utilized for training. Aside from that, the school has a huge parking area where our buses can park comfortably,” said Ginete.

Central Visayas finished fourth in the annual DepEd-organized multi-sports competition and this year the team is hoping to take the overall title away from the perennial winner—the National Capital Region.
