Dimakiling places 4th in national rapid open

FIFTH-seeded international master IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City finished fourth in the just-concluded 2013 National Rapid Championship Open Division held at the PSC Athletes' Dining Hall in Manila.

Grand master (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio, Jr., seeded fourth, topped the 71-player field by tallying 7.5 points after nine rounds while seventh-ranked GM Richard Bitoon and 37th-seeded Jerad Docena scored identical seven points to place second and third, respectively.

Dimakiling bested other 6.5 scorers IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, second-seeded GM Mark Paragua, FM Paulo Bersamina and IM Chito Garma via superior tiebreaks.

The Dabawenyo ace, who hails from Sasa, stamped rivals Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar, Christy Lamiel Bernales, Garma, FM Mari Joseph Turqueza, Alcon John Datu and Jerry Areque then split the point with Paragua in the fourth round.

Dimakiling, however, bowed to Garcia in the fifth round and Antonio in the seventh round.

He placed eighth in the national blitz chess open the other week.
