Dumaguete mulls building dorms in public schools

THE Dumaguete City Government is eyeing the construction of dormitories in selected public schools in the city using the Special Education Fund (SEF) and other sources to prepare for forthcoming sports competitions.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said on Monday, November 20, that since Dumaguete had been declared by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as Negros Oriental's sports hub, it is but proper to address the concerns for accommodation, especially sleeping quarters, for the athletes.

He said dormitories that could accommodate about 3,000 athletes are being eyed to be built in 20 public schools in the city, including an area in Talay, complete with shower and comfort rooms in anticipation of the big event in February next year.

He said this way, classes would not be disrupted, unlike the present set-up where classrooms are used as billeting quarters for athletes.

Remollo said the PSC donated about 700 sleeping mats that were used in the recent Batang Pinoy Visayas regional qualifiers.

An estimated 3,000 athletes, officials, and other delegation members were in Dumaguete for the week-long Batang Pinoy qualifiers that featured 18 events for children aged 15 and below. (PNA)
