Eagles nab third win

THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Eagles picked their third straight win, while rival Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons marched to their fifth victory in the high school division of the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Eagles clamped the offensive prowess of Rommel Diapera for a 78-72 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, while the Dragons avenged an 82-point loss to the defending champions Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT) Wildkittens last year with a clinical 87-52 bashing in the opening match.

SHS-AdC focus its defense on the high-scoring Diapera, who was limited to just nine points, nine days after scoring 32 against the Dragons.

The game was closely fought all the way but the Eagles’ defense held on for their third win in five games. USPF is also 3-2.

Julius Salvador Cadavis topscored for SHS-AdC with 18 ponts and Bradley Brian Bacaltos added 15. Joshua Corcilles scored a game-high 20 and Jayson Cando contributed 11 for USPF.

In the first game, the Dragons dropped a tearing 27-14 blitz in the second quarter to build a 46-28 lead at the bend to cruise to their fifth win in six games.

The Dragons’ only loss was against the University of the Visayas (UV).

Nike Montalvo again displayed his scoring prowess and delivered 21 points—including nine in the second quarter—as CEC took over the solo leadership over the idle UV, which has a 3-1 record.

Aside from Montalvo, James Neil Sumayang also shared the offensive load with 14 points.
