MANILA -- A Filipino was killed by rebels in an ambush in Mozambique on Saturday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose did not identify the victim, but media reports said the Filipino was a female teacher who was on a passenger bus when it was attacked by Renamo insurgents.

“We have received a report from our embassy in Pretoria of an overseas Filipino being a fatal casualty in an ambush last Saturday in Mozambique,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said Thursday.

“Assistance is being extended to the family in repatriating the remains,” Jose added.
