THE site www.urbandictionary.com defines “jandals” as the New Zealand term for flip-flops. It is said to be the abbreviation of “Japanese sandals.” The site www.stuff.co.nz reports that there is currently a controversy in the country as an entity was able to register the supposed generic term “jandals” as a trademark.

Another New Zealand company sidestepped the issue by registering “Chandals” but claims no exclusive use thereof and invites all New Zealanders to use it. Wikipedia says that flip-flops are also known as “zori,” “thongs” (in Australia), “slops” (in South Africa), “go-aheads,” “slappies,” “slides,” and “step-ins.” In our country, we know them as “tsinelas.” Calling Mang Kulas.
