Sunnexdesk

Clint Fabiosa & Ana Liza Villamor

SPECIALLY-COINED marks comprise of words that are a totally new and unique combination of letters or symbols, unknown in the language or are completely out of common usage and unfamiliar to the ordinary consumer. (J. Thomas McCarthy, McCarthy on Trademarks and Unfair Competition, Chapter 11, 11:4.)

Examples that come to mind are “MATWOOD” vacuum-treated wood, “R&M” dried mangoes of Cebu, “TRIPLE-E” dried squid, or “RDAK” transport system. There are also lots of foreign marks which are specially-coined such as “SONY,” “NOKIA,” and others.
