Lecture, unveiling of ‘Magellan 500’ today

THE University of San Carlos Press (USC Press) and the USC Cebuano Studies Center, together with the Cebu Historical Society, will unveil today the official logo of the Magellan Quincentennial, a private-sector initiative to prepare for the 500th anniversary of the Magellan expedition in 2021.

This will be held today at 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Cebu Library at the second floor of its Magallanes Branch beside Magellan’s Cross. The event is hosted by BPI Foundation Inc. Highlighting it is a talk by historian Dr. Danilo M. Gerona about his controversial 500-page book, Ferdinand Magellan: The Armada de Maluco and the European Discovery of the Philippines, Based on Primary Sources.

This will be followed by a presentation of the digitization of some 4,000 pages of files about Cebu that a team from USC made last November during an official visit at the Archivo de la Provincia Augustiniana de Filipinas in Valladolid, Spain.

Dir. Victorino Manalo of the National Archives of the Philippines will grace the event as guest of honor. The event is open to the public. Gerona will be bringing copies of his book for those interested to purchase them. More details are available with Jed at 420-2384. (PR)
