THE Department of Health (DOH) 7 warned the public against heat stroke, hypertension, sunburn and sore eyes, and urged everyone to stay hydrated throughout the hot months.

During the regular Kapihan sa PIA forum yesterday, health officials also said that the dry spell may cause an increase in rabies and animal bite cases.

Dr. Dino Caing, medical officer IV of DOH 7, advised the public to lessen their exposure to the sun, especially now that the temperature is getting hotter.

“It’s getting hotter this May, and too much activity will only generate more heat,” he said.

Caing also reminded the public to apply sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 for protection, and avoid exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., as this is the time when the ultraviolet rays are intense.

“Possible ang rabies because of the heat. The cases will really increase by three times during summer. The City Government should control the population of stray dogs on the streets or they can immunize those dogs,” he said.

Caing also considered that the risk of food poisoning can be higher during the hot months due to crops affected by too much heat.

The forum yesterday highlighted the celebration of World Immunization Week and World Malaria Day, which will be observed next week.

Dr. Shalinie Claour, Expanded Program Immunization Program coordinator of Cebu City Health, said that they will not be conducting major activities this time.

They will just continue with the information dissemination about the importance of vaccination and promote the immunization day, which is conducted in Cebu City every Wednesday, she said. Monique R. Acha, CNU Comm Intern
