Man ‘steals’ tourist’s bike, faces charges

THE Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor has indicted a man from Barangay Lahug for allegedly stealing the motorcycle of a Japanese tourist in July.

State Prosecutor Aida Sanchez found evidence to charge Kevin Francis Garcia with carnapping before the Regional Trial Court.

“Based on the evidence on record, there is reasonable ground to believe that carnapping has been committed and that the respondent (Garcia) is probably guilty,” said Sanchez in her resolution.

Garcia’s indictment came after he failed to submit his counter-affidavit. A P180,000 bail was set.

Garcia, 28, of Gorordo Ave., Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, allegedly stole the Yamaha Mio motorcycle owned by Kumiko Noguchi.

The 41-year-old Japanese, who lives in Barangay Subangdako, Mandaue City, reported to the police that her motorcycle worth P40,000 was stolen.

Noguchi said she parked the motorcycle on Jakosalem St., Barangay Sto. Niño, Cebu City to buy groceries when it was stolen.

A day after she reported the incident to the police, Noguchi said she was informed that her motorcycle was recovered and that the police arrested the suspect.

At the Pardo Police Station, the Japanese identified her motorcycle and showed documents to the police to prove her ownership.

While the complainant did not see the taking of her motorcycle, Prosecutor Sanchez said the recovery of the unit from Garcia’s possession was enough evidence to indict the suspect for carnapping.
