Pagasa: Hotter days ahead in Northern Mindanao

Jojo Garbo Erediano

A WEATHER specialist of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) based in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental said there is still no chance of widespread rain in Northern Mindanao Region, especially in Cagayan de Oro City.

Although the city's temperature is still far from dangerous levels, local weather specialist Luz Mercado said Cagayan de Oro's heat index in the coming days can range between 33-36 degree Celsius.

"Dili paman siya in a dangerous level, precautionary lang. We give an advisory lang sa mga tao nga dili dapat sobra ang exposure sa gawas, especially tong mga tigulang ug adunay gibati kay delikado gayud," Mercado said.

Mercado said the hottest temperature ever recorded in the city was 39 degree Celsius in 1991.

Forest fires

All forest fires in Bukidnon's Mount Kitanglad and Mount Katalungan are already contained as of Friday, April 15, Office of the Civil Defense Northern Mindanao Regional Director Ana Cañeda said.

“Salamat pud sa intermittent rains, bisan temporary pa lang, pero dako kaayo ug natangang sa pagpugong sa pagkalat sa kalayo. Gamay nalang antos makalingkawas na gayud ta sa kainit sa El Niño," she added.

Smoke, however, can still be seen from the burnt areas which means fire may still recur depending on the wind direction as well as its humidity and temperature, she added.

The OCD-Northern Mindanao conducted on Wednesday the second round of aerial inspection in the said sites to assess the area.

The team was composed of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, Philippine Air Force-Tactical Operations Group, and Army's Eastern Mindanao Command.
