Phivolcs: No steaming, quakes at Kanlaon

John Roger "Darlah" Orquiza

MT. KANLAON volcano on Negros Island has had no incidents of steaming or volcanic quakes, according to the local geology office.

However, conditions have not been declared "normal" yet, said Jay Jamello, volcanologist at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.

Phivolcs will continue to monitor Kanlaon volcano, said Jamello. If no abnormal activities are recorded over the next few weeks, Phivolcs will issue another advisory.

At present, Kanlaon volcano is still on Alert Level 1, which imposes a four-kilometer-radius danger zone around the volcano. Entry into this danger zone is prohibited.

Mt. Kanlaon has been exhibiting abnormal activity since November 23 last year.
