MANILA-- Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday that rebel groups in the country might attack on May 10 polls to disrupt the first national automated elections.

PNP said the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) is planning to "sow terror on elections day."

Rebel groups like the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Moro National Liberation Front "could also be used by (political) candidates to sow terror on election day," the PNP said in a television interview.

Chief Superintendent Noel Manabat, PNP Deputy Director for Intelligence said in an interview: "Rogue commanders will allow themselves to be employed by unscrupulous candidates as an instrument of terror against their political rivals."

Intelligence reports of the PNP, according to a television report, showed the ASG, under a certain Abu Benhur, will engage in kidnappings and bombings on or prior to the elections. The rebel group "is supposedly targeting the rivals of its political candidates," the report added. (Sunnex)
