Qatar beats Gilas

Vernie Yocogan-Diano

THE QATAR national team got even with the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas with a 77-69 victory in overtime in the final match of their two-game exhibition series at the Al Gharaffa Stadium in Doha last Saturday.

After suffering a humiliating 46-38 loss last Friday, the Qataris avenged their loss by using their quickness for a higher-scoring game.

However, the Filipinos were unfazed as they kept the game close and were actually leading in the waning seconds of the game.

They could even have won it if not for a dribbling violation called on Mark Barocca.

The regulation period ended at 64-all but the Qataris were bent on redeem themselves as they asked the Gilas squad for an extra period.

Exhibition matches that end in a tie are usually concluded as a draw.

Barocca topscored for the Gilas with 20 points, while Chris Tiu added 14. Jamal Sampson had another monster game with 12 points on top of 13 rebounds, two steals and three blocks.
