PANABO City's Jason Salumbre emerged open champion in the 1st Mayor James G. Gamao Cup-14th Araw ng Panabo Open Chess tournament.

Salumbre edged fellow 5.5 pointer Carl Zirex Sato of Panabo via superior tiebreaks to pocket the P5,000 cash prize in the six-round Swiss system tournament organized by the Panabo City government.

Sato settled for P3,000 while Arace Quiñonez of Davao City placed third with P2,000 prize.

National master (NM) Cedric Magno was fourth and John Christian Lesaca of Panabo fifth.

The event attracted 51 players.
