CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- From V. Tiomico Street to Nicolasa Dayrit-Panlilio Street.

This was the suggestion of Vice Mayor Jimmy Lazatin of this capital city to rename the street in honor of the sacrifices made by local heroine and icon of women Nicolasa Dayrit-Panlilio who played a significant role during the Philippine-American war.

Along V. Tiomico Street is the monument of Dayrit Panlilio.

Lazatin said the he is planning to raise to the City Council the possible renaming of V. Tiomico Street after Dayrit-Panlilio to further recognize and remember the heroism of Dayrit-Panlilio.

He disclosed that since the remains of Dayrit-Panlilio are interred in her family’s ancestral home, the Hizon-Henson house which is located along V. Tiomico Street, the renaming of the street may be appropriate.

“Looking into the contributions of Nicolasa Dayrit to the country’s history, and of course the significance of this road to her which houses her ancestral home, I just thought that it might be more appropriate to name it after her. But of course, this is with all due respect to Vicente Tiomico who was an appointed mayor of the city for one year and has his own share in the city’s history,” Lazatin explained.

Tiomico served as “civil government municipal president” or mayor of the City of San Fernando in 1906-1907 after being appointed by the American colonizers.

The almost one kilometer street named after him are where most of the key businesses in the city downtown are, aside from the couple of heritage houses including the Henson-Hizon house.

However, Lazatin clarified that once introduced to the Sangguniang Panglungsod, the proposal will still go a long way with public hearings and deliberations, among others, before it can be approved as an ordinance.

“But at least we have the first step in further recognizing the heroism of our local heroes, as well as introducing them to the youth and imparting the values they had. This is not just for Nicolasa Dayrit but for all the local heroes here in San Fernando,” he said.
