Sonsona faces Arellano

MARVIN Sonsona returns to the ring today in a “keep-busy” 10-round bout with Jonathan Arellano at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The 24-year-old Sonsona is looking to earn another shot at a world title, this time in the featherweight division. He is currently rated No. 3 in the World Boxing Council (WBC) behind Abner Mares at No. 2 and Robinson Castellanos at No. 1.

Sammy Gello-ani, Sonsona’s handler, is hoping to land a title eliminator for a mandatory shot at the WBC featherweight title currently held Gary Russell Jr.

Sonsona has been riding on a momentum from his impressive campaign last year. He started his 2014 run with a stunning third-round knockout of former world champion Akifumi Shimoda and then avenged his loss to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. with a split decision win.

In 2010, Sonsona suffered his first career defeat with a fourth round knockout after moving up in weight to challenge Vazquez Jr. for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight crown.

The 27-year-old Arellano lost three of his four fights last year. His latest defeat was by majority decision to Vazquez Jr.
