Tacloban school opening 'successful'

THE Department of Education Tacloban City Division is thankful to the positive response of students who attended the first day of classes, paving the way for the successful opening of the new school year.

City Schools Division Superintendent Gorgonio Diaz said there were still students who opted to enroll on Monday. To avoid the disruption of classes, students were advised to enroll at the principal’s office. The principal then ushers the students to their respective classes.

Diaz said that an increase of enrollment in the northern villages were recorded, particularly in Lucio Vivero Elementary School in New Kawayan village, owing to thousands of families that transferred to permanent relocation sites from high risk zones tagged after Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.

The official cited the insufficiency of classrooms to accommodate new enrollees, as well as four additional teachers from the division to cater to the need of the said school.

Diaz said no untoward incidents were recorded during the first day of classes.

“The support and assistance coming from the different stakeholders like the City Government and other donors contributed a huge part in ensuring a successful opening of classes,” Diaz added. (PNA)
