THE Cabinet approved in a meeting Tuesday the proposed "unique" identification card for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

"The Cabinet has approved with conditions the iDole-OFW Identification Card System," Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella told reporters in a text message.

Abella said the approval of the ID card for Filipinos working abroad would help them to easily transact with the government agencies, as well as with the private sectors.

He said the OFWs could also provide access to their personal records with the government using the proposed ID card.

The IDs for Filipino migrant workers could also be used as "debit card or ATM card" for the OFW bank, the presidential spokesperson said.

Abella said another convenience the OFWs could get is that they could use their IDs as "beep card" when they ride in the trains of the Metro Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit.

Meanwhile, Abella said the President and the Cabinet members agreed to make Reserved Officers Training Course (ROTC) mandatory among Grades 11 and 12 students.

Abella, however, did not elaborate the details about the mandatory ROTC program. (SunStar Philippines)
