Wet New Year as low pressure area enters PAR

THE first two days of year 2018 are going to be rainy in most regions as a low pressure area has entered the Philippine area of responsibility, says state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

As of 3 a.m. Sunday, December 31, the weather system was spotted 960 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

“There’s a 50-percent chance that it will develop into a tropical depression (on Monday, January 1) and it will be named ‘Agaton’,” weather forecaster Samuel Duran said in the agency’s 4 a.m. advisory aired over social media.

There is also a possibility that it will make landfall in Eastern Visayas and Eastern Mindanao Monday afternoon or Tuesday dawn.

As it approaches, it might bring heavy rains in the entire Mindanao and Eastern Visayas region.

Meanwhile, the Bicol and Eastern Visayas regions are forecast to experience scattered rainshowers Sunday due to the tail-end of a cold front.

Northern monsoon rains will affect Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora and Quezon. (SunStar Philippines)
