Mayor calls for preservation of Mother Earth

IN LINE with the celebration of Earth Day, City of San Fernando Mayor Leonora Wong rallied her fellow Simonians to engage in various activities aimed at preserving the environment.

Wong, who has been an advocate of environmental protection, said there is already an urgent call to preserve Mother Earth before it will totally deteriorate and get back for the human’s recklessness.

“Climate change is here. Kapag mainit, sobrang init. Kapag umulun, sobra-sobra rin. Same kapag malamig ang panahon. Wala ng sakto lang kaya kung hindi pa tayo kikilos, sa atin din babalik ang lahat,” Wong said.

As local chief executive, Wong said she has been spearheading activities for environmental protection such as tree planting, clean-up drives, as well as the protection of farmlands, among others.

To mark this year’s celebration of Earth day, the local government organized a fun run, which kicked-off from the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Parish Church to the Municipal Hall in Barangay San Agustin.

During the fun run, participants were given garbage bags each and were asked to pick up trash along the way for proper disposal after the event.

“We posed it as a fun run para makaencourage ng maraming participants pero ang gusto natin ay makatulong sila at maging active sa environment activities natin, in this case the clean-up drive,” Wong said.

Aside from the fun run-cum-clean-up drive, the local government, through its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, also hosted an environment seminar to educate Simonians on the importance of preserving the environment.
