TO INTENSIFY its advocacy in environmental conservation and preservation, the local government of San Fernando through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) made initiatives involving the youth.

Annually, San Fernando conducts various activities to celebrate and show support to the National Environmental Awareness and Clean Air Month held every November.

This year, Cenro called on the participation of the youth sector through holding Jingle-making and On-The-Spot Bayong Painting Contest. Secondary schools of this city showcased their creativity and cleverness as they competed against each other on November 27 at the Mini Conference, Heroes Hall.

Prominent local artists, Raphael Maniago and Jerwin Dayrit, together with Stacey Keach, inspired the participants as they also joined in the painting activity and exhibited their own artworks.

In an interview, Regina Rodriguez, Cenro officer, expressed her overwhelming happiness and urged even more participation from Fernandinos.

“We are very happy that they are actively participating in our advocacy. All we ask for is more participation pa para yung mga kasama, ka-klase at kabaryo nila na hindi pa talagang fully supportive sa ating mga initiatives ay mahikayat din nila,” the officer remarked.

Aside from the said activity, “Bantay Tambutso” program of Cenro is ongoing.

Together with the implementing bodies, they randomly test vehicles’ smoke emission in compliance with Republic Act 8749, or the Clean Air Act.

This, with the strong leadership and consistent programs of Mayor Edwin Santiago who “never tolerates mal-treatment and negligence of the environment.” (PR)
