CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local government unit (LGU) of Meycauayan started the daunting task of cleaning the Meyacuayan River that has been turned into a virtual dumpsite for garbage and other materials.

The DENR said around five tons of residual solid waste mostly made up of single-use plastics, styrofoam packaging and household garbage were collected on Friday, January 10, by some 200 personnel from the DENR.

The activity was also led by the Meycauayan LGU, Philippine Army and volunteers from industries. The Meycauayan LGU committed to sustain the cleanup efforts until the area is totally cleared of debris and solid wastes.

The Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando River System is one of the main tributaries that drain to Manila Bay. The cleanup is part of the effort to clean Manila Bay and its tributaries.
