Mayor: Media work is public service

CITY Of San Fernando Mayor Edwin Santiago cited the essential role of legitimate mass media and journalism to nation building.

“Mass media plays a big role in the community, especially in this era of information where everybody thirsts for knowledge about everything almost every second of our lives. Just like us in government, you deliver service needed by the public,” Santiago told local media on Friday, December 14.

Like local officials and government employees, Santiago said journalism also requires a great amount of time and effort to deliver vital information even at the expense of missing personal meetings and family gatherings.

He also lauded the bravery and courage of journalists in delivering fair and unbiased news notwithstanding the danger encountered in coverages, and in hitting some of the most powerful personalities.

“Journalists are true public servants ready to sacrifice time and resources just to inform the public of the news and current happenings in the community,” he furthered.

Santiago expressed his gratitude to local mediamen for continuously delivering vital information, both good and bad, to Fernandinos and all Kapampamgans.

“In behalf of the city government, we would like to expresse our deepest gratitude to all of you for your unrelenting support and partnership in delivering quality public service to Fernandinos,” he said.

THREAT. According to a Capitol consultant, the Cebu City Government is threatening to shut down the Cebu North Bus Terminal at the back of SM City Cebu (left) and the Cebu South Bus Terminal along N. Bacalso Ave. for operating without a business permit. The Province, which runs both terminals, maintains that it operates the facilities as a public service for passengers going to the province and vice versa. /
