De Leon: How My Last New Year’s Resolution Came True

Patrick Joven S. De Leon

TIME for New Year’s resolutions? Well, here is what I learned this year: Reverse Engineering your roles provides you the clarity and steps to get you there.

Reverse Engineer. Yes. I use this term so many times during my talks and I myself, continue to understand what it really means.

Reverse engineering your life means you start with the end and move backwards. You plot how you get to where you want to be.

That is a simple idea. Covey has talked about it a lot. Gary Vaynerchuck talks about it a lot. And I understood how to do this. What I didn’t understand was where I wanted to go.

It is a portion of what you have to do. What I feel is more important is knowing where you want to go.

Let’s take the example of wanting to meet Asia’s world-widest Millennial Speaker, Jonathan Yabut, Do I want to meet Jonathan and take selfies or do I want to be respected by him?

I want to be respected.

So how do I reverse engineer that?

Respect

---Growth of having something to show him

---Building a lasting company or brand

---Doing the work of what it takes or what he says to do

---Picking a lane to focus on and making it go

Reverse Engineer my life:

When I die I want to be known by the lasting impact I made on individuals through the information, resources, listening, grace, advice, and speeches they have encountered.

How do I work backwards to get there?

Influence comes through reach. To influence others I need a larger reach. Which means more opportunities to sustain by growth. This reach comes when I have the ability to show what I did (as being successful) to give opportunities (through jobs and projects) to have a place to influence (online and in person) and to have the freedom to pivot and change (flexibility with finances).

Where can I start?

---Develop an insane work ether that is focus

---Create a place of conversation/develop my listening skills

---Track and grow my venture to a place of influence

---Create more things to share with others

---Be ruthless and committed to the vision

So let’s begin with an end in mind this 2019! Let’s double down on reverse engineering. Happy New Year, folks!
